Fitting a Dashcam
disclaimer: I am not an electrician, follow any of this at your own risk!
I recently bought a dashcam to fit into Dexter. Priorities were:
- Some sort of recording when parked
- Reversing camera
I know the main purpose of a dashcam is to record driving activity, but that was actually not important. As they all come with that feature we’ve got it though, bonus!
We bought a Wolfbox G840H on a black friday deal for the princely sum of £135. We also needed a hardwire kit and an extension cable for the rear camera. After messaging the suppliers to find out which cables we needed, they very kindly offered to send us the rear camera extension kit and sent us the link to the hardwire kit. The unit also includes GPS, meaning your speed & direction are displayed on the screen. Unfortunately that information doesn’t seem to be recorded anywhere.
Initially I just ran this off a 12V adapter, but to enable the parking monitoring the camera needs to be hardwired. For this I ran the power cable under the headling, down the A-pillar and behind the glovebox to the fuse box. In the fuse box, I used some piggy back fuses to cable in the permanent and switched lives. I used fuse 19 in the top panel for the one, and fuse 15 in the bottom panel for the other. To work out which was permanent & which was switched I use my handy electric tester.
To complete the circuit, the neutral needs to be wired to an earthing point somewhere on the vehicle. I used a screw just behind the glove box which worked a treat.
Other cables running from the camera unit where for GPS & the rear camera. They both followed the same route under the headlining initially. The GPS cable then went down the A pillar, where I stuck the device to the windscreen. The rear camera cable continued under the headlining all the way to the rear of the van, where it dropped down the rear pillar. Once in the corner, it went out the same path as the rest of the cables going to the barn door. Once in the door it runs up to behind the rear door handle where I had installed the camera.
The one issue I had was using the extended, 50" cable, the image seemed to have a shadow on it. So much so that the image wasn’t clear and registration plates almost appeared double. Wolfbox customer support were excellent in trying to resolve this. In the end they sent me a 33" cable as the 50" was too long which cured it.
